Call for papers: ARDS Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture

The 13th ARDS conference will take place in Leuven on 26 and 27 November 2026. The conference is a collaboration between the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, ARDS – The Platform for Medieval Sculpture and M Leuven. The theme of this edition is Innovative Research Tools and Methodologies for the Study of Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture.

Innovative research

The study of medieval and Renaissance sculpture is entering a transformative era: digital technologies, advanced imaging techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches are reshaping how we document, analyse, and interpret these works of art. Projects such as the Digital Corpus of Flemish Primitives and the Marks on Art database have already significantly advanced access to essential information. The recently started Early Netherlandish Sculpture project, a collaboration between the RKD and several museum partners, aims to make the corpus of medieval and Renaissance sculptures from the Low Countries accessible within the framework of RKD Research. The RKD hopes that such projects will encourage innovative research into sculpture.

Call for papers

The organizing committee of the 13th ARDS conference invites scholars, conservators, technologists, and cultural heritage professionals to contribute papers that explore innovative research tools and methodologies for this field. The aim of the conference is to examine the opportunities that lie ahead for overcoming traditional challenges and opening new avenues of inquiry.
