Artists' associations archives now available digitally
The digitisation project that began in 2023 has been completed: the archives of two leading Dutch artists' associations are now available online via RKD Research. The material offers a unique insight into more than 110 years of activities of Arti et Amicitiae (1839 – ca. 1950) and De Onafhankelijken (1912 – ca. 1950).
Arti et Amicitiae was founded on 3 December 1839 and is still active in its monumental building on Rokin in Amsterdam. In 2023, the RKD received the association's archive, which covers the period up to 2008. As an interesting counterpart, the archive of De Onafhankelijken (The Independents) offers a valuable insight into artists who broke away from traditional movements and strove for innovation.
The archives of Arti et Amicitiae and De Onafhankelijken are a valuable source for research into the Dutch art world. In addition to correspondence, they contain annual reports, membership lists, publications, reports, committee and project documents, exhibition files, floor plans, deeds, cash books, drawings, posters and photographs.
The entire archives had already been catalogued and made accessible via our platform. What is new is that a large part of the documents has now also been digitised. These digital documents can be recognised in the inventory by an image icon and can be opened directly by double-clicking on the item.
Would you like to go directly to the archives? Simply click on the buttons on the right. Documents that are not yet available digitally can, of course, be requested and viewed in our study room.
The digitisation project was carried out in collaboration with The Hague Municipal Archives, where the Pulchri Studio archive is managed. More information about this project can be found in our previously published news item. The project was supported by Metamorfoze.
